Hilary Duff quickly became famous when she starred as Lizzie McGuire in the popular Disney Channel television series, “Lizzie McGuire” from 2001-2004 and in “The Lizzie McGuire Movie” in 2003.
She is set to reprise her role in the highly anticipated “Lizzie McGuire” reboot, alongside other original cast members Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire/Mother Lizzie), Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire/Lizzie’s Dad), Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire/brother Lizzie ), Adam Lamberg (Gordo) and, of course, the animated Lizzie. However, the reboot was canceled because, according to Duff, “the stars didn’t align.”
Although the project was canceled, Duff is still open to working on a “Lizzie McGuire” reboot.
Is A “Lizzie McGuire” Reboot Still On The Table?
Disney
Hilary Duff, who is currently promoting the second season of “How I Met Your Father,” recently went on “Watch What Happens Live,” where host Andy Cohen read questions from fans, who mentioned “Lizzie McGuire” and asked Duff the same yes he would still consider doing a reboot if “it lives up to his vision.”
Duff quickly said, “Of course.”
Cohen then asked what the “major tipping point” was for the reboot, to which the “So Yesterday” singer was a little flustered, trying to be lighthearted and not say something she didn’t mean. After a pause, Duff gathered her thoughts and finally answered, “Disney+ is very new and I think they’re thinking [pause] and we are thinking about us [pause]and…,” Duff paused before ending with, “I’m optimistic.”
When Duff says, “I think they’re thinking about them [pause] and we are thinking about us [pause],” she alluded to Disney and Duff’s “creative differences” on the project. “She has to be a 30-year-old doing 30-year-old things,” Duff previously told Women’s Health, wanting to push the more mature Lizzie. “She doesn’t have to do bong rips and have one-night stands all the time, but it has to be genuine. I think they’re scared.”
“Lizzie McGuire” Cancelled

In December 2020, Hilary Duff took to social media to announce that the project had officially been canceled. “I am so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. He has had a lasting impact on many people, including myself,” he said. “To see the loyalty and love the fans have for him, to this day, means a lot to me.”
The actor later broke the news, saying Lizzie was gone. “I know effort and conversation are everything trying to make the reboot work, but unfortunately despite everyone’s best efforts, it’s not going to happen,” he wrote. “I want any Lizzie reboot to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie is today. That’s a worthy character. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she will be and the adventures we will have with her. I’m so sad, but I promise everyone tries their best and the stars don’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020 is made of.”
Because the 34-year-old stood her ground, the project was eventually scrapped, but Lizzie will always be close to the actress’ heart.
“It would be silly for me not to know that I have a sweet spot playing that relatable girl,” she went on to tell Women’s Health. “I’m that girl.” Even as a child trying to separate himself from the character that made him famous, he managed to maintain his convictions. “It was a conscious choice not to be angry and try to change people’s opinion of who I am,” he says with a laugh. “That doesn’t mean I don’t want to try!”
