Hina Rabbani Khar entered politics in 2002 when her father could not contest the 2002 general election due to President Pervez Musharraf’s requirement that candidates be graduates. At the time, he had just returned to Pakistan after receiving a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the United States following his father’s request to contest in his place.
Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan
On 16 November 2002, Hina was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan on a ticket from the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) party, representing the NA-177 (Muzaffargarh-II) constituency in Punjab. He held the position until 15 November 2007. In 2007, Khar joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and was re-elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from the NA-177 (Muzaffargarh-II) constituency on 17 March 2008; she held the position until 16 March 2013. On 13 August 2018, she won the National Assembly election for a seat reserved for women from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

On 24 March 2008, Hina Rabbani Khar was appointed as the Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs. She became the first female politician to present the federal budget in the National Assembly on 13 June 2009. Khar made major contributions during her tenure as Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs, working on financial budget planning and economic policy. On 11 February 2011, he was appointed as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, a position he served until 18 July 2011. During his visit, he extended an invitation to the Russian leadership to visit Pakistan and emphasized the need to maintain cooperation and commitment to support peace in Afghanistan, which should be led by the Afghan people. At the 16th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Tehran, Iran, Khar addressed rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and stressed that regional stability was at stake. Hina Rabbani Khar and her family members, including her father Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar, mother Sumaira Abdullah (also known as Sumaira Rabbani Khar), brother Malik Raza Rabbani, and four younger sisters, were implicated in a forgery case in 2018. The case was filed by the stepbrother Hina Malik Abdul Khaliq Rabbani Khar and resulted in charges under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Act. According to the complaint, Noor Rabbani Khar had parted ways with Zaibun Nisa, the complainant’s mother, and subsequently transferred 1,535 tracts of land to his new family using political influence.
