Hochul called Cornell hours after dad’s funeral to discuss antisemitic terror threat

Just hours after her father’s funeral Sunday, Gov. Kathy Hochul called the president of Cornell University to speak about threats of violence made against Jewish students as antisemitism runs rampant across the state during Israel’s war with Hamas.

“I was really unpacking after coming home from my father’s funeral and got the news about what happened on campus,” Hochul told broadcaster Nacham Segal during an appearance on his radio show Thursday morning.

“I called the president late at night and I said, ‘Let’s have breakfast together with the students.'”

Hochul first heard about the death of his father, John Courtney, from a brain hemorrhage while visiting the Western Wall on his way to Israel after the brutal Hamas attack.

Courtney works as a clerk in a steel mill and is a devout Catholic.

Hochul said he feels the same way for the students at Cornell.

“I said, ‘I’ll protect you.’ That’s my number one job as state governor,” Hochul told Segal.
