Popular broadcaster Hoda Kotb is reminiscing about being diagnosed with breast cancer.
The talk show host opened up in an interview about the mental anguish he went through after learning he had the disease. Kotb admitted that the diagnosis made him think he was going to die, adding that the news came as a huge shock.
Going for a mastectomy and the treatment plan ultimately saved Kotb. However, the TV personality shared that she wishes she had checked earlier and urged other women to do so as a preventative measure. She now aims to live fearlessly and continue to support breast cancer awareness.

In an interview with E! News, Kotb recalled the moment she got the call from her doctor informing her she had terminal breast cancer. The news was so shocking that he passed out from the entire conversation.
“I think I just passed out for the rest,” the broadcast journalist revealed on the publication’s “What I Wish I Knew” series, “But it hit me like a hammer. I was stunned. We’ve done a million stories about people saying, ‘I didn’t think it’s going to be me,’ and that’s how I felt.”
The call came in 2007, and at the time, Kotb was living a healthy life and was still 43 years old. He also had no family history of such a condition which in turn made the news affect his mental health.
As for how she felt about the diagnosis, the tv personality shared that she thought it was the end of the road for her.
He added, “I’m just scared I’m going to die.”

Almost two decades have passed since he got the news that changed his life. Immediately after the diagnosis, Kotb underwent a mastectomy, followed by a treatment plan that put the cancer into remission.
After further treatment, he was declared cancer-free and has yet to experience a recurrence of the disease. Now in retrospect, the 58-year-old admits that he wishes he had gone for the check-up sooner.
He continued per E!, “After thinking about it, I wish I had gone earlier to be checked. But at the time, I didn’t think about it. I’m just thinking about life.”
Kotb has since become an advocate for breast cancer awareness and has shared the story of her journey to inspire others facing the same ordeal.

Most importantly, she urges her followers to get screened for breast cancer and to always put their own needs first. He reminded them not to be afraid of receiving a challenging diagnosis because many methods and technological advances can treat the condition.

“God put them in my life at the right time,” Kotb said as he reflected on his relationship with his children and how he finds it hard to imagine his life without them. The television star also claimed that his life has improved since overcoming cancer.
“My best years of my life were after cancer,” he said. “All the best years happened after that. That’s not the end of it. That was the beginning.”

She said, “I want my kids to know resilience is something we do,” she said. “We saw on the bright side of the road. We seek the right, not the wrong.”

Kotb added, “I think the world is for me and the best years are ahead of me,” he said. “The gift of fearlessness is amazing because it allows you to live. If you are afraid, you are not alive. If you’re scared, you’re covered. If you’re scared, you stay inside. If you are afraid, you will never meet someone. But when you’re not afraid, you get the whole world.”
