Hold that nog! Nearly 20% of workers cheat on partner at office holiday parties: survey

Go to your office holiday party and risk being put on Santa’s naughty list.

A third of Americans have been tempted to cheat on their partner at a winter workplace celebration, and nearly two in 10 actually did, a new embarrassing survey found.

People search engine Spokeo polled 1,158 American adults about infidelity in October and found that 35% were almost lured into cheating on their partner at an office Christmas shindig, while 17% admitted to having an affair.

The salacious statistics come as no surprise to Big Apple therapists, who say people tend to form intimate bonds with colleagues under pressure at work.

“A lot of people spend more hours in the office than they do with their partner, and there’s all kinds of intimacy and tension that builds in that for sure,” Matt Lundquist, a couples therapist at Tribeca Therapy, told The Post.

“I suspect most of the relationships at holiday parties are ones that have been made for a long time,” he said.

Respondents didn’t say whether their holiday party extramarital affair was a sloppy affair at an off-site bar or in an office break room, but the company highlighted several reasons people engage in their extramarital marriages.

Of those surveyed, 22% said they flirt with someone other than their partner because they like the attention, while 20% said they don’t trust their partner.

More than 11%, however, said they had affairs in a taboo rush, which Manhattan-based psychotherapist Lesley Koeppel said may be intensified in a workplace setting.

“People do business for … the thrill of getting caught, the risk you take,” he said. “That’s even higher in the office, where you have an expectation to be professional and respect certain boundaries.”

Koeppel noted that the amount of alcohol consumed at the December rally had a clear influence on office-party relations.

Winter is also “a time to indulge, where we should have what we want, get what we want,” he said, adding that some pencilers might think to themselves: “I’m always attracted to this person, and it’s a party office, and it’s a holiday. So I’m going to give myself this little gift.”
