Hospital patient steals ambulance, leads police on chase in South Carolina

A patient at a South Carolina hospital feels well enough to steal an ambulance from a parking lot and lead the police on a chase.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a theft at Union Medical Center around 10:50 a.m. Friday.

A deputy who was near the hospital went to the back of the ambulance and was unable to pull it over, police said.

The driver, later identified as Collier Bruce Simmons, 34, of Enoree, fled and drove erratically on Highway 49 into Lauren County.

Police continued their pursuit into Spartanburg County.
