A crazed man barricaded in a house in Austin, Texas with two hostages opened fire on police officers and killed a SWAT team member.
Violence broke out in South Austin around 4 a.m. when Austin Police SWAT officers forced their way into a home where the man was allegedly armed with a knife and a gun and had taken a hostage, Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson announced at a press conference Saturday morning.
A woman who managed to escape called police shortly before 3 a.m., screaming for help and saying she had been stabbed, Henderson said.
Officers responded to the call and forced their way inside but retreated when the suspect opened fire.
The SWAT team was then called in and entered around 4 a.m., Henderson said.
