House blocks Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s impeachment resolution against DHS chief Mayorkas

House lawmakers rejected efforts to force a vote on impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday, instead referring to a resolution introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to the House Homeland Security Committee.

Eight Republicans joined all Democrats in a 209-201 vote to send the impeachment resolution to the House panel, which is already investigating Mayorkas over his handling of the crisis at the southern border.

“The article of indictment against Mayorkas has been gathering dust in the committee for months. It’s time to move the vote to the House floor, not send it back to committee,” Greene argued in an X note moments before the vote.

Voting against the impeachment effort were Republican Reps. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), Tom McClintock (R-Calif.), Patrick McHenry (RN.C.), John Duarte (R- Calif.), Virginia Foxx (RN. C.), Cliff Bentz (R-Ore.) and Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

Twenty-four lawmakers – 12 Democrats and 12 Republicans – did not vote for the resolution.

The lower house was forced to vote on Greene’s measure after he introduced it on the House floor Thursday as a “special resolution,” forcing leadership to act on the legislation within two legislative days.

Georgia Republicans have accused Biden administration Cabinet officials of “high crimes and misdemeanors” for failing to “secure the borders and protect the Nation from invasion” by millions of illegal immigrants.

“Continued aggression on our southern border is a direct national security threat to the United States and to the people within it,” he said on the House floor Thursday, reading from the impeachment resolution.

Greene’s resolution also accused Mayorkas of violating US citizens’ right to protection from intrusion, as enshrined in the Guarantees Clause of Article IV of the Constitution, and ignoring the Secure Fence Act of 2006.

He further claimed that Mayorkas had violated the Immigration and Nationality Act by “practicing[ing] catch and release policy,” ending contracts for border wall construction and blocking the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico and Title 42 policies for migrant deportations.

If the measure passes Monday, House lawmakers will likely debate Greene’s resolution and then vote on articles of impeachment.
