House Ethics panel says next move against George Santos coming by Nov. 17

The wall may be closed by Rep. Lying Long Island Republican George Santos.

The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it will reveal its “next action” against the scandal-hit congressman “on or before” November 17.

The 10-member panel has been investigating the 35-year-old representative from New York’s Third District since February.

Claims within the panel’s jurisdiction include allegations contained in a 23-count indictment brought against Santos in the Eastern District of New York, as well as allegations he violated federal conflict-of-interest laws and sexually harassed a former employee.

“The [investigative subcommittee] has contacted approximately 40 witnesses, reviewed over 170,000 pages of documents, and authorized 37 subpoenas,” the committee said in a statement.

Last week, Santos pleaded not guilty to a superseding indictment that contained 10 additional charges against him, which were in addition to the 13 charges initially slapped on him in May.

Long Island prosecutors accused him of falsifying records with the Federal Election Commission, stealing the identities of campaign donors, and racking up tens of thousands of dollars on their credit cards without authorization.

“I don’t know the back and the backdoor system of the FEC, how – how the reports are filed, so to blame me for the false statement of the FEC is a bad move,” Santos said after the new charges were made. down

Despite the scandals and legal dangers surrounding Santos, he has rejected calls to step down from Congress and opted to run for re-election in 2024.

The lawmaker admitted to The Post in December 2022 that he fabricated key claims he made about his biography during his past two congressional campaigns.

Santos was forced to lie about his education and work experience, admitting that he “never worked directly” for Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that he never graduated from college despite claiming to have earned a degree from Baruch College.

The representative also confirmed that he had exaggerated the story of his family’s alleged Jewish heritage – including his grandparents fleeing Nazi persecution – saying: “I have never claimed to be Jewish. I am Catholic. Because I know my mother’s family has a background Jew, I say I’m ‘Jew.’”

Santos’ fight has drawn many primary and general election challengers, who see an opening for the seat he successfully won from the Democrats in 2022.

Meanwhile, his campaign fundraising declined, showing negative results for the third quarter of the year.

Six fellow Republicans from New York are leading the charge to oust Santos, which requires a two-thirds majority.

Sources told The Post that attempts to remove Santos are unlikely to succeed, with many GOP lawmakers refusing to pursue the legal process.

A spokesman for Santos did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
