WASHINGTON – Members of the House of Representatives on Monday asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to share tapes of President Biden’s interview with special counsel investigator Robert Hur and information about records that may be related to his family’s foreign business dealings.
The chairmen of the three House committees leading the impeachment inquiry into Biden on corruption charges warned they would issue subpoenas if Garland did not comply with the request by Feb. 19 — setting up a high-stakes election-year showdown.
Republicans believe the information could boost their investigation into Biden’s role in his family’s business dealings in China and Ukraine and that the Oct. 8-9 interview tapes could also damage Biden by further documenting what Hur described as the president’s cognitive decline as a “well-meaning, man.” old with a weak memory.”
“As detailed in Mr. Hur’s report, classified materials found at President Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware and the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement included documents related to China and Ukraine,” the trio of House leaders wrote to Garland.
“[T]here are concerns that President Biden may have kept sensitive documents related to certain countries involving his family’s foreign business dealings,” wrote Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Ways and which is tax focused. “Furthermore, we seek to understand whether the White House or President Biden’s personal counsel placed any limits or restrictions on scope during the interview that would impede the line of inquiry regarding evidence (emails, text messages or witness statements) linking the President directly to the payments a troublesome foreigner.”
The congressional request seeks “all documents and communications, including audio and video recordings, related to the Special Counsel to President Biden’s interview” as well as “documents identified as ‘A9’ and ‘A10’ in Appendix A of Mr. Hur’s report, related to the President’s call Biden on December 11, 2015 with then Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk.”
Joe Biden classified documents investigation report
- Special counsel Robert Hur ruled that President Biden “willfully retained and disclosed classified material” after leaving office as vice president in 2016.
- Records kept by Biden include documents on military and foreign policy in Afghanistan as well as other national security and foreign policy issues.
- Biden kept some classified documents to help write his memoirs. According to the report, Biden told a ghostwriter in a 2017 conversation that he “just found all the classified stuff downstairs.”
- Despite those findings, Hur’s 388-page report recommended that the president not face charges.
- The special counsel noted that Biden would likely present himself to jurors as a “sympathetic, well-intentioned old man with a failing memory” if he stood trial.
Republicans further demanded that “all communications between or among representatives of the Department of Justice, including the Office of Special Counsel, the Executive Office of the President, and President Biden’s personal counsel refer to or relate to Mr. Hur’s report.”
In addition, the GOP chairman sought records related to Biden’s ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, who Biden allegedly shared classified information with, according to the Hur report.

“Please submit this information as soon as possible, but no later than 5:00 pm on February 19, 2024. Given the seriousness of this matter, the Committee is prepared to compel the production of this material if necessary,” the panel wrote.
The White House and Justice Department did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on Monday.
Hur’s nearly 400-page report, released Thursday, made no mention of first son Hunter Biden or first brother James Biden, who regularly involve their powerful relatives in their foreign business dealings.

There is evidence, including photos, emails and witness statements, that Joe Biden as vice president and in subsequent years interacted with their partners from two Chinese government-related business ventures and with their Russian, Mexican, Kazakh and Ukrainian clients.
The House impeachment inquiry is investigating the relationship as well as alleged Justice Department cover-ups to protect the Biden family.
