House Oversight chairman argues the Bidens ‘are the ones that got played’ by Hunter’s surprise contempt hearing cameo

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) made the case that it was the Biden family that was being “played” by the first son’s surprise appearance during Wednesday’s hearing on whether to hold Congress in contempt.

“I think the American people see the arrogance and entitlement of the president,” the Kentucky Republican said during an interview with NewsNation of Hunter Biden’s 17-minute appearance during the oversight panel hearing.

The committee voted along party lines to refer a resolution of contempt against Biden to the full House.

The contempt resolution stems from Biden’s refusal to comply with a subpoena for his testimony issued last year by the House Oversight and Judiciary committees as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

The 53-year-old’s eldest son has demanded he be allowed to testify in public, while Republicans leading the inquiry insist he must first sit for a deposition in private.

“He is very welcome to appear at the committee hearing, after the dismantling, every investigation, whether it’s a congressional investigation, or whether it’s an investigation by local parties and law enforcement, they bring people to deposit at the end of the investigation,” Comer said.

The oversight chairman noted that while Biden expressed a willingness to answer questions publicly, he largely declined to do so on Wednesday when the opportunity presented itself.

“He appeared. You heard [Rep. Jared] Moskowitz, you played a clip there that said, ‘Hunter Biden is here to answer questions.’ Two minutes later, time was up and I knew Marjorie Taylor Greene, she was going to ask her a question, she ran out of there,” Comer said.

“So in my opinion, Biden is the one playing today,” he argued.

Comer dismissed criticism that the tumultuous moment would backfire on Republicans investigating the 81-year-old president’s involvement in his family’s extensive overseas business dealings and lead to more sympathy for Hunter Biden.

“Look, at the end of the day, we have a simple question. What are you doing to receive millions of dollars from our enemies around the world? If he can answer that question, we’ll be done with him,” the lawmaker said of his committee’s interest. to the eldest son.

“We are investigating his father, we are trying to determine whether or not Joe Biden was compromised because of the millions of dollars his family received from our enemies around the world. We have a specific question. They said he came here to answer today’s questions. The first question that was asked he ran away from there. So I mean, they can try to create a narrative that he’s there to answer questions, but when I ask him questions, he walks away,” Comer said.
