House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) tore into the Biden administration and New York City Mayor Eric Adams Wednesday after Brooklyn high school students were forced to give way to immigrants sheltering in their gym.
“This week, Secretary Mayorkas confirmed that 85% of illegal immigrants detained at the border are released into the interior of the United States,” Johnson told The Post in a statement.
“Now, because of the administration’s policy choices, students and teachers are forced to switch to distance learning to accommodate illegal immigrants in their schools. From the president to the mayor, support for illegal immigration has declined, putting the needs of non-citizens ahead of our own.”
“If Biden and Mayorkas refuse to reverse course and secure the southern border, our students and schools will continue to pay the price for administrative layoffs,” Johnson added.

Nearly 2,000 migrants were brought into the James Madison High School gym Tuesday afternoon around 5 p.m. for fear that the tents set up for them at Floyd Bennett Field would collapse due to heavy rain and wind.
“House Republicans have a solution: we passed the Non-Sanctuary Schools Act in July to ensure that schools function as learning sanctuaries, not sanctuary city casualties,” Johnson also said. “Unfortunately, President Biden threatened to veto the bill.”
The bill, introduced by Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-NY) of the top, passed the House in July 2023 on a nearly party-line vote, with Molinaro’s fellow New Yorker Rep. Patrick Ryan one of four Democrats to support it.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has yet to take up the legislation after Biden’s Office of Management and Budget issued a “strong” statement against it.
“The administration strongly opposes HR 3941, the Non-Sanctuary Schools Act of 2023, which would displace local control, interfere with the ability of States and municipalities to effectively govern and make decisions about their school buildings,” the statement said.
“The bill would do this by prohibiting certain educational institutions from receiving Federal funding—including funds that strengthen equal access to education, assist students from low-income families, increase educational opportunities for those with disabilities, and provide access to college —than using them. facilities to protect non-citizens seeking asylum in the United States, as such non-citizens are permitted to do so under the law.”

Asked about the uproar on Wednesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre avoid questions from Fox News’ Peter Doocy and referred the matter to New York City officials.

By Wednesday morning at 4:30 a.m., all immigrants had been removed from the school — a source described to The Post as “madness” — but students were still required to attend classes virtually.

Strong winds subsided after 1am and “and all guests returned safely” to their tent city at the abandoned airport in Jamaica Bay, according to The city’s Office of Emergency Management.
Other migrant shelter facilities have been located on Randall’s Island in Manhattan and at the former Creedmor Psychiatric Center in Queens, but no people have been moved to alternative locations due to the extreme weather.
Last month, migrants told The Post that a heavy rainstorm on Dec. 18 left them fearing for their lives inside the 2,000-bed tent facility, with 55-mph winds loosening metal bolts and hinges, causing them to fall from the ceiling.
