How Does Martin Short Feel About Best Pal Steve Martin Retiring?

Martin Short shares his thoughts on the possibility of his best friend and the cost of “Only Murder in the Building” Steve Martin’s retirement.

The pair, who have been friends for longer than anyone can remember, often make lists for Hollywood’s top friendships. As the two graced the 2022 Emmy Awards red carpet on Monday, September 12, Short addressed rumors about whether or not Martin will retire from acting. This update comes a month after Martin hinted at not working on any projects for a while.

According to PEOPLE, when Short and Martin stopped by for a chat with Laverne Cox E! on Monday night, he asked the latter to clarify his statement about having no plans to “find” another Hollywood project. In response, Martin said:

“It was a bit overwhelming. They asked me, ‘Are you thinking about retirement?’ I said, ‘Well, here it is. I’m doing a television show, I’ve got a book coming out, and I’m touring with [Short]. That’s what my retirement looks like — that’s what it looks like.’ “

Short, who was right next to him, chimed in and said, “I can’t imagine he’s going to retire. I hope not, because then you know what happened to me,” making a finger gesture above the neck.

Martin — who, along with Short, lost the Emmy award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series to Jason Sudeikis — revealed last month that he won’t be “looking” for other shows and movies after “Only Murders in the Building,” adding, “I didn’t want to do a cameo. It’s, it’s weird, it is.”

The reason for going in the opposite direction is that the “Pink Panther” actress can focus on her life away from the big screen. The 77-year-old, who began his entertainment journey in 1968 writing an episode of “The Summer Brothers Smothers Show,” added:

“I have a very fun family life. To shoot a movie now, go somewhere else to live, I’m not willing to do that anymore. I can’t disappear for three months.”

Martin was already on track to “dial down” his career and seemed content to do his comedy tour with Short before “Only Murder in the Building” came along. According to a recent story from The Blast, the producer claims that his live comedy show made him happy, though “there may be a natural end to that.”

The multiple Grammy Award winner also revealed he’s not interested in doing studio comedy anymore because “Failure is written all over it!” One thing Martin hasn’t done is call his slow-moving career an official “retirement.”

In fact, the author of “Number One Is Walking: My Life in the Movies and Other Diversions” insists he has no interest in doing stand-up but explains that “retired” isn’t the right word for what’s next for him.

In July, The Blast noted that Martin and Short were talking about the Emmys rejecting the third musketeer from “OMITB” — Selena Gomez. The two addressed the “injustice” during an interview where they said:

“Yes, we’re very happy we got a lot of nominations. We’re a little disappointed that Selena wasn’t nominated because she’s so important to all three of them, to the show.”

Martin explained that it was the balance that Gomez brought to the show that earned her and her best buds their nominations. Fortunately, the singer and actress earned an Emmy nomination as the show’s executive producer. Speaking about what viewers should expect from the show’s upcoming third season, Short said that since there are so many “tentacles to every script, something in script one really affects script nine.”

Therefore, the writers of the popular Hulu series had to “finish the whole journey” before filming could begin. Short said, “For the end of this season, we have a teaser for next season. So you have to have a story in your head to make a teaser for … I’m lost. There’s so many seasons. I can’t, you know.”

The mystery series won several Emmy categories, including Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program (Half-Hour), Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation, Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Contemporary Costume, winning three of many.
