A gun attack at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday appears to have been a planned and targeted operation that left eighteen dead and at least 13 injured – the deadliest mass shooting of 2023.
As of Thursday afternoon, suspect Robert Card, wanted on eight counts of murder related to the shooting, remained at large as hundreds of state and federal officials scrambled to find him.
His family said he had suffered mental health problems in recent weeks and urged him to turn himself in.

First report of an active shooter
Wednesday, 6:56 p.m.: Police responded to multiple reports of an active shooter at Just-In-Time Recreation, a bowling alley in Lewiston shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police said.
A second location is reported
7:08 p.m.: Law enforcement received several calls reporting an armed man at Schengees Bar & Grille about four miles from Just-In-Time, Ross explained.

The first picture of the suspect appeared
8:00 p.m.: The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office released a crude image of the then-unknown suspect holding what appears to be an AR-15 assault rifle on Just-in-Time on Facebook, asking the public to come forward with any information.
Shelter removed
8:09 p.m.: Maine State Police issued an active shooter alert in Lewiston, and urged local residents to shelter in place, CNN reports.
Police in the neighboring city of Auburn issued an alert at the shelter minutes later.

9:17 p.m.: Lewiston police released a photo of a white Subaru with a black bumper, and asked the public to notify them if the car is seen.
The suspect was identified
9:26 p.m.: The Lewiston Police Department received a call identifying the suspect as Army Guard Robert Card, 40, of Bowdoin, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.
9:56 p.m.: A Subaru matching the previously released photo was found at the Pejepscot Boat Launch on the Androscoggin River in Lisbon, outside of Lewiston, according to the Sun Journal.

Hunting
10:52 p.m.: Lewiston Police announced on Facebook that they are looking for Robert Card as a person of interest in connection with the shooting.
The public has been warned that Card should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

At least 18 people are dead and more than a dozen injured after a gunman opened fire at two separate locations in Lewiston, Maine.
Police identified the possible suspect as Robert Card, 40, and believe he may be driving a white Subaru Outback, which was later located in Lisbon, about 8 miles from the scene of the shooting, according to CentralMaine.com.
Residents in Lisbon were also ordered to shelter in place, with authorities warning that Card may be armed and dangerous.
Maine State Police are advising local residents and businesses to lock their doors and shelter in place.

On Wednesday night, emergency personnel were called to separate shootings at the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley and at Schemengees Restaurant Bar and Grille, according to the Sun Journal.
The number of deaths nearly equals the number of annual homicides in the state of Maine — with 29 homicides reported in 2022.
Lewiston is a city of about 38,000 nearly 30 miles north of Portland.
President Biden was informed of the mass shooting.
Thursday, after 6 a.m.: After failing to find Card throughout the night and early morning, police extended a shelter-in-place order to the Bowdoin area.
Officials confirmed the death toll
10:30 a.m.: Governor Janet Mills and other officials address the crowd at a news conference.
Mills and law enforcement leaders confirmed that 18 people were killed and 13 others were injured.

Seven victims died in the bowling alley, and eight in the bar, Ross explained.
Three more victims died after being transferred to the hospital.
An arrest warrant for eight counts of murder has been issued for Card, law enforcement confirmed.
Late morning: Leroy Walker told NBC News that his son, Schemengees bar manager Joseph Walker, was killed in the shooting.
2pm: The US Coast Guard confirms that they are looking for Card and that he may be trying to get away in a 1989 Bayliner Marine corp 15′ fiberglass boat that public records show he owns.
