Human remains have been found near the South Carolina home of a 49-year-old grandmother who was reported missing nearly five months ago by her ex – with her sister even finding “her jawbone between my legs.”
Melissa Aguilar was reported missing Aug. 18 after leaving her home in Holly Hill following an argument with her ex-boyfriend, WIS-TV reported, citing investigators with the local sheriff’s office.
His sister, Sarah Shipman, told WAFB that officials told her last week that the body was found less than half a mile from the home – although a positive identification has yet to be made.
She said she then made the gruesome discovery when she went to the forest site with Aguilar’s two daughters, Brittany Ranew and Shanna Brown.
“As I was hugging my nieces and consoling them, I looked down and found my sister’s jawbone between my legs,” the shocked sister told WAFB.
“We know his smile, and that smile is in the dirt, and you don’t see it, and you know someone’s smile.”
Shipman rushed his nephew from the area, then returned to examine the body more closely.

“I found her dental work and almost 20 more pieces of my sister that they had gone through and left behind,” he told WAFB, referring to law enforcement.
The family issued a statement to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office after the discovery of the body, which was sent to the South Carolina Division of Law Enforcement for processing and identification.
Shipman said that the family was assured that the body would be retrieved but when they returned to the scene Tuesday they found what appeared to be additional bones and teeth.
“I knew, something told me there was more,” he told WAFB.

Shipman said the family has been “traumatized” by the lack of care from the sheriff’s office, which they claim has failed the investigation.
“If the sheriff’s department is not capable of doing the job properly, leaving my sister behind, they should own up and call in outside resources,” he told the outlet.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to the outlet about the family’s allegations.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell told WAFB in an email that “the investigation into the disappearance of Ms. Melissa Aguilar is an active and ongoing investigation.

“We are still asking the public for any information regarding Ms. Aguilar. If you have any information in this case, you are urged to contact us,” he added.
Meanwhile, the family praised the coroner’s office and thanked Deputy Coroner Valencia Golden for responding to the scene, where the officer said some clothing was also found in the woods.
“She was the light in our darkness, she held everything together and she was there for us when no one else was,” one of the daughters, Brown, told WIS-TV.
Coroner Samuetta Marshall said the bodies were scattered over a “wide area,” about 30 feet, not far from Fourwind Road.
An outside forensic anthropologist brought in to assist in the investigation has so far collected more than 90% of the skeletal remains, the outlet reported.

As the family waits for identification, Brown said they have many questions about the mystery.
“I know he (Aguilar) won’t go,” he told WIS-TV. The family last saw Aguilar the day before he was reported missing by his ex, who was not identified in the report.
“Because the last conversation I had with him the day before happened, we talked about my sister’s wedding, and her dress that she bought, and then we talked about my wedding,” she said.
“So nothing adds up at all. And I just want answers, and I don’t think I’ll ever really have closure, but it’s worth it,” Brown added.

Ranew described their mother as the glue of the whole family.
Brown told the outlet there are no words to describe the pain of losing a mother.
“It’s hard to list all the amazing things about him because he is more than anyone can describe,” he told WAFB.
“My 6-year-old always asks me, ‘Why is Mamie on the news?’ and then my 1 year old won’t remember it. I need to remind him of who he is. He will miss my wedding day,” he said.
