WASHINGTON – Hunter Biden capitulated on Friday and agreed to take the floor in the House impeachment inquiry into his father – moving to avoid a vote as soon as next week in contempt of Congress.
Hunter, 53, raised the white flag in a letter to Congress from his attorney Abbe Lowell.
“If you issue the appropriate new subpoena, now that there is an impeachment inquiry authorized, Mr. Biden will comply with a hearing or deposition. We will accept such subpoenas on Mr. Biden’s behalf,” Lowell wrote.
The House Judiciary and Oversight Committee voted separately on Wednesday to hold Hunter in contempt — after his eldest son failed an Oversight hearing, angering Republicans after he declined a scheduled Dec. 13 interview.
Contempt of Congress is punishable by at least 30 days behind bars, although the decision to prosecute will be made by President Biden’s Justice Department appointees if the full House clears the sanctions.
It was unclear Friday whether Republicans would delay the contempt legislation.
Lowell’s letter reflects a marked change in Hunter Biden’s posture after high-priced lawyers and other Democrats previously claimed Hunter could not sit for a deposition because he preferred to testify publicly.
The new communication claims that the original subpoena was flawed because the House did not vote to open the impeachment inquiry when it was issued in November — even though the Oversight and Judiciary committees have subpoena power in their own right.
Republicans said they would welcome a public hearing with Hunter Biden, who frequently implicates his father in his foreign business dealings, but only after a closed deposition led by committee staff who will sift through the facts to create a record for the investigation. .
Public hearings in the impeachment inquiry have featured a concerted effort by Democrats to flip the script by arguing that former President Donald Trump and his family also have ethical dilemmas while more eccentric Republican panelists have veered sharply off-script.
