Hunter’s lawyer pal was ‘at the center’ of talks relating to Biden’s handling of classified docs

Close friend Hunter Biden – who got a job as legal counsel to then-Vice President Joe Biden thanks to his friend’s influence – was at the “center of various discussions” related to the president’s handling of classified documents, the White House has acknowledged in a letter to special counsel Robert Hur.

In 2016, John McGrail was Biden’s primary legal adviser on how classified material from his vice presidency should be handled once he leaves office, according to a joint letter from Richard Sauber, the White House’s special counsel, and Bob Bauer, the president’s personal counsel.

McGrail got his job as deputy attorney general and later counsel to Vice President Biden in 2014, just weeks after Hunter Biden personally lobbied his father to give the job to his friend, according to emails found on his abandoned laptop.

“Before you fill the position please talk to me — J. McGrail would love to serve,” Hunter wrote to “Robin Ware,” one of his father’s email aliases, in a message titled “Advisor.”

“Re Johnny call me right away,” Biden replied.

The connection is puzzling, said Jim Hanson, an information strategist who has studied laptop messages.

“At the same time that Hunter was collecting cash from the Chinese, these classified documents turned up at the house where he was partying with prostitutes and doing hits,” Hanson said. “And it just so happened to be his best friend from way back who was transporting the documents.”

Sauber and Bauer’s letter, attached to Hur’s scathing report on Biden’s mishandling of classified material, sought to refute the president’s explosive characterization as “an old man with a failing memory.”

But it also highlighted the central role of McGrail, a longtime Hunter Biden associate who, emails show, joined him in yoga class, in jokes about “hot staff” on Capitol Hill, and at his father’s maiden ball — and who, in 2016, hosted Eric Schwerin, Hunter’s business partner, in two White House meetings. It is unclear where Hunter Biden and McGrail first met.

McGrail told Hur investigators that in January 2017, in the final days of the Obama administration, he oversaw the transportation of classified Biden papers to storage at the National Archives.

“It’s just, ‘Your records will be sent to the Archives,'” McGrail testified. “That’s all.”

He claimed not to know how much classified material — including notebooks, diaries, note cards and memos — from Biden’s time as vice president had been destroyed at his boss’ home in Wilmington, Del. and investigators stonewalled with various allegations. from memory loss.

When Biden left office in 2017, McGrail returned to the Treasury Department, where he previously worked. In 2022, he became the lead adviser for finance at the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, according to LinkedIn.
