Husband of Makayla Meave-Byers faces murder rap after body found wrapped in carpet

A husband who claimed his wife went on a date with a mystery man before her body was found wrapped in a rug in a ditch in Oklahoma has been charged with her murder – accused of shooting her in the head so he could be friends with another woman.

Frank Byers was arrested last week on charges of first-degree murder, unauthorized removal of a corpse and defilement of human remains in the death of Makayla Meave-Byers, 30, KFOR reported.

“Relieve a little. For us, it feels like 10 years have passed even though it’s only been a few weeks,” Meave-Byers’ mother, Barbara Harper, told the outlet.

“I never thought he would do something like this,” she said of her son-in-law.

“I can forgive him through Christ, but I’m still human and I want the death penalty for him and anyone who helped him.”

Byers reported his wife missing on September 16 and told police “she had gone on a date with someone she met on Facebook” as part of their open marriage.

He continues to plead for help in finding his wife, writing on Facebook that “she means the world to me. She really is the backbone of the family. I love her so much.”

Meave-Byers’ body was found Sept. 20 wrapped in a rug in a drainage ditch about 2,000 feet from her home in rural Pottawatomie County. The medical examiner determined that he had been shot twice in the head.

“We got some results back on some evidence that we were waiting on,” Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie said last week, according to the news outlet.

“We executed a search warrant on the house. Frank Byers was inside, and he was taken into custody for a probable cause affidavit for first degree murder,” he added.

Byers lives in a house in El Reno, not far from where his wife lives in Macomb.

His work boots had a “blood-like substance on them” that investigators said came back as a positive DNA match to Meave-Byers, KFOR reported, citing court records.

Authorities also found Walmart receipts for mops, ammonia and bleach on Byers’ property the day she reported them missing, according to the outlet.

Detectives who read the text messages believe Byers killed his wife so he could “have a relationship” with another woman, court records reportedly show.

Byers allegedly removed the SIM card from his wife’s phone and inserted it into another device to initiate fake conversations between the two to create a fictitious story,” authorities said, KOCO reported.

“He was at all the family gatherings. We would never… I would have never thought he would do something like this,” Harper told KFOR, though she said she grew suspicious of his behavior after her daughter disappeared.

“No worries, no sadness, no tears. It’s all just a show, and we can see it,” said the grieving mother.

Meave-Byers “recently asked Byers for a divorce,” the incident report said.

The 30-year-old mother was found dead days after her husband claimed she went on a date with a mystery man. Pottawatomie Co. Sheriff’s Office.

When police searched his home, they found broken glass, “blood stains on the floor” and “blood on the bed sheets,” according to the document. They also found two .22 caliber shell casings, apparently matching the .22 rifle Byers said he kept in the cabinet.

The gun appeared to have been fired recently and had residue on the barrel and was broken, officials said.

“I know as parents, we feel guilty in our hearts for not seeing the signs, not knowing and not asking, but if there wasn’t any domestic violence before, she kept it from us very well. He gets annoyed when we ask questions,” Harper told KOCO.
