Ice Spice has stated that he and Matty Healy are on good terms following his controversial remarks during a recent podcast interview.
In the podcast, which sparked a backlash, the 1975 frontman along with hosts Nick Mullen and Adam Friedland discussed the rapper’s ethnicity and made disparaging comments about people of Chinese and Hawaiian descent. Healy has apologized to Spice for using inappropriate terms, including “chubby Chinese woman” and “Inuit Spice Girl” to describe her.
Ice Spice Finally Addresses Matt Healy’s Controversial Comments About His Ethnicity, Confirming They’re Great
Since rising to fame late last year, Spice, who is of Dominican and Nigerian descent, has managed to avoid making headlines for the wrong reasons. However, he unwittingly became embroiled in controversy when Healy appeared on “The Adam Friedland Show” podcast in February.
During the podcast, the host made racist comments about the artist’s legacy “Boy’s a Liar pt. 2” and also mimicked him using a stereotypical accent. “Yeah, that’s Ice Spice,” claimed the English singer-songwriter, who also nicknamed the 23-year-old as “stupid,” he claimed at the time.
A backlash ensued, the podcast was removed from the streaming service and Healy apologized on stage two months later during a performance in Auckland, New Zealand. The apology was ultimately ignored by Spice, who was – and still is – a big fan of 1975.
“When I listen to that little podcast or whatever, I’m so confused,” he says of the disaster in a new interview for the latest issue Diversity, featuring him on the cover. The 23-year-old said:
“Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese women’ or some thing like that, and I was like, ‘Huh? What is the meaning?’ First of all, I’m thick. What do you mean Chinese? What? But then they apologized.”
The “Barbie World” rapper explained that “the whole time, I don’t really care,” adding, “But it’s funny because I saw her at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a few days ago, and she was like, ‘Hey, you okay?’ and I was like, ‘Of course.’ He apologized to me several times. We are good.”
Regarding Healy’s public apology, NBC News reported that he had spoken directly to the Yonkers native, saying:
“I never intended to hurt anyone. I’m sorry if I’ve offended you and, like, Ice Spice, I’m sorry. It’s not because I’m mad that my joke was misunderstood, it’s because I don’t want Ice Spice to think I’m an ad—. I love you, Ice Spice. I am sorry.”
The record producer later stated, “I don’t want anything to be misconstrued as mean. I don’t mind being a comedian … but I don’t want to be thought of as, like, the cruel type.” He addressed the podcast appearance in another interview published in May and dismissed his comments, claiming “it doesn’t really matter.”

In addition to apologizing for Spice’s ill-advised comments, Healy also subtly spoke about his recent breakup with singer Taylor Swift during a live show at 1975 in June. As it turns out, a video of the “I’m in Love With You” hitmaker thanking concertgoers for their support at the event has been circulating on X — formerly known as Twitter. In the 35-second recording, the pop singer begins her speech:
“On the front there are some beautiful signs that say ‘You are loved.’ That is very, very kind of you. I’m sure it refers to… as you all know, I’m not really online at the moment, and I’m sure people just call me ac— non-stop, and I’m not online. But what I have been with is with my son.
As detailed by The Blast, Healy concluded by writing, “Honestly, as much as I appreciate it, it’s very beautiful, and I thank you, but I don’t need it because I have it.”
Reacting to the candid confession, one fan began with a lengthy statement, “He’s loved so much, and all of these things are going to turn out positive for him, don’t [sic] looks like now, but it will happen.”
They then added that the four-time Brit Award winner “will be AOK… and this confirms the breakup, in my opinion. He shouldn’t have given the mess a third chance; third time’s not the charm this time!”
