IDF destroys Hamas tunnel in Palestine Square where leaders hid during Oct. 7 attack

The IDF blew up a vast Hamas tunnel system hidden under the Palestinian Plains in Gaza where terrorist leaders hid during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel — as officials said the ground offensive in the north was nearing an end.

The Israeli army released a video on Thursday of a series of massive explosions that tore through a tunnel in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City that once housed the top of Hamas.

Colonel Benny Aharon, who gave a press tour two days before the demolition, said the homes and offices of top Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and army chief Muhammad Deif were linked to the network of tunnels, The Times of Israel reported.

Also located in the affluent neighborhood is the home of the daughter of Hamas’ top political leader, Ismail Haniyeh.

The Jewish state believes Sinwar and Deif were operating in tunnels under the Palestinian Plains when their forces invaded Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 240 others.

The IDF deployed about 20 tunnel shafts leading to the Palestinian Plain’s underground network, with some entrances located just feet from the neighborhood’s main traffic circle.

Aharon told reporters that the electricity used throughout the tunnel was available because Hamas siphoned power from civilian generators and solar panels, with enough energy stolen to allow the terrorists “to survive there for months.”

Given its location and size in such a populated area, Aharon claims “it’s impossible for people not to know what’s going on here.”

Along with electrical systems, the IDF found several weapons in the tunnels, including firearms, rockets and equipment for night operations.

The destruction of the tunnel was carried out by Aharon’s 401st Armored Brigade, together with the elite combat engineering unit Yahalom, which has destroyed Hamas forces in northern Gaza.

After nearly two months of fighting in northern Gaza, the IDF said on Wednesday night that its ground offensive in the area was almost over as only a handful of Hamas bases remained.

In the past 24 hours, the IDF said it had carried out airstrikes against 230 Hamas targets.

The United Nations estimates that more than 1.8 million Palestinians, 85% of the population, have been displaced by the war after fleeing northern Gaza.

The UN added that nearly 20% of all Gaza’s buildings and infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed as a result of Israeli attacks.
