Illinois cop shot by suspected killer in shocking dashcam footage

A man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend can be seen on shocking dashcam footage as he shoots an Illinois State trooper who pulled him over, police said.

The newly released footage shows the moment Cristobal Santana, 37, stepped out of his car on October 24, just before 11pm to confront officer Dakotah “Kody” Chapman-Green on Toronto Street, in Springfield.

Chapman-Green immediately backed away from the car after seeing Santana armed with a gun, and she stepped out of frame as the gunman pointed his weapon at police.

Santana quickly swerved behind the vehicle before opening fire, firing at least 10 times, CBS News reported.

Although Chapman-Green was hit several times, the officer continued to chase Santana into a nearby parking lot, where the suspect continued to beat the injured officer with his gun.

The state trooper was repeatedly struck in the head, causing him to suffer brain bleeding and a fractured face and skull, state police said.

Santana then fled the scene, with two Good Samaritans rushing in to help Chapman-Green as she struggled to get back up.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.

“He is still in the hospital and continues to improve every day,” Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly told reporters Tuesday.

Hours after the shooting, Santana was arrested by state troopers after being hit by a police car.

He was also hospitalized and has been charged with five counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery on a police officer and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say the special education and pre-K teacher was shot 10 times in the chest outside her home.

Family members told police that Lopez recently filed for an order of protection against Santana, alleging that he was exposed to violence when they were together, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago police said the homicide remains under investigation and have not yet named Santana as a suspect.
