He is a character developer at Marvel and co-creator of the character Kamala Khan. In 2020, he directed two short films, including Push and I don’t want to be alone. In September 2020, Vellani completed auditions for the role of Kamala Khan, who is the superheroine in Ms. Marvel, Disney+ and Marvel Studio miniseries. He stars alongside Yasmeen Fletcher, Mohan Kapur, Laurel Marsden, Matt Lintz, Azhar Usman, Zenobia Shroff, and Saagar Shaikh in this miniseries. Iman comes from a Muslim family, and in this series, she plays Marvel’s first Muslim Superhero. Once, he spoke about this experience and said,
Growing up, I felt very disconnected from my culture and religion because I grew up in Canada. I don’t have brown friends who are not from my mosque and I don’t hang out with them. Filming the show, I learned a lot about my ancestry. That’s the special thing I get to share with the character, and that’s because I work with so many incredible creators who come from a Muslim or Pakistani background.
In June 2022, she also appeared in A Fan’s Guide to Ms. Marvel, a short documentary featuring interviews with the film-making team and Vellani. On June 8, he made his first appearance on screen. Vellani’s mini-series and show were praised by the audience and received many positive reviews. This miniseries was released as part of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and was created to form the basis for The Marvels, which is the next film of the franchise. Vellani is also cast in the film The Marvels, which is expected to release on 28 July 2023.
