Punjab Legislative Assembly Election 2022

Inderpreet Kaur grabbed media attention when Bhagwant Mann became AAP’s chief ministerial candidate on 18 January 2022 for the Punjab Assembly elections 2022. In February 2022, a complaint was made to the chief electoral officer of Punjab against Bhagwant Mann by a resident of Nabha, Patiala, named Harkirat Singh Sakrali, who alleged that Mann had concealed his marital status in his election affidavit. Apparently, Sakrali accused Mann of putting ‘not applicable’ in the couple column, citing that Mann was not legally divorced. Sakrali also revealed that he had noticed that Inderpreet and Mann did not appear for the second statement of motion after their divorce petition in 2015. According to information obtained by Sakrali, no judgment for divorce had been passed. While addressing the media, Dhuri returning officer Ishmit Vijay Singh claimed that he had not received any complaint against Mann. He also said,

It is not the prerogative of the electoral officer to check the marital status of a candidate unless the candidate has a serious criminal background.”

Contrary to Sakrali’s claim, the Bioprofile of 17th Lok Sabha Member Bhagwant Mann, states Mann’s marital status as ‘divorced.’
