Indiana man rescued from car wreck after surviving 6 days trapped in hidden, crushed vehicle thanks to Good Samaritans

A pair of Indiana fishermen made a life-saving catch Tuesday when they spotted a wrecked car with the driver still trapped inside and clinging to life after crashing nearly a week earlier.

Indiana state authorities are calling it a “miracle” that the unidentified man is still alive after his car left the highway and came to rest under a bridge on Interstate 94 last Wednesday.

First responders rushed to the man’s rescue Tuesday around 3:45 p.m. after hero Nivardo Delatorre and his father-in-law Mario Garcia spotted the vehicle near a creek as they searched for a suitable fishing hole, according to reports.

The gleam of the car drew their attention through the forest.

One of the men pokes his head into the car where he sees the man’s body, believing him to be dead.

“I went to touch him and he turned away,” Garcia said at a news conference broadcast on ABC 7 Chicago. “And it almost killed me there because it was quite a shock.”

“He’s alive and he’s so happy to see us, like he really is – I’ve never seen such relief,” he said. “He said that he tried to scream and shout, but no one would hear him. It was just silence, just the sound of water.”

The victim was pinned in her seat and unable to reach her cell phone following the crash, police said.

The two Good Samaritans called 911 and stayed by his side until first responders arrived.

Emergency crews cut the man, who is in his 20s, from the wreckage with heavy machinery and took him to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition with possibly life-threatening injuries, police said.

Their rescue effort took several hours due to the difficult terrain and the way the driver was trapped inside the crushed vehicle, according to local stations.

“Frankly, it’s a miracle that he’s alive. In this weather, we’re pretty lucky here this Christmas season, because our temperatures, as you all know, are above normal,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield said during a press conference.

“So that’s in favor of this individual,” he added. “Last year we had a cold snap.”
