Indonesia’s Mount Marapi erupts again, leading to evacuations of at least 100 residents

AGAM, Indonesia — Mount Marapi in Indonesia erupted again on Sunday, spewing smoke and ash high into the air, but no casualties were reported.

The Marapi Volcano Observatory in the West Sumatra region recorded an eruption with an ash column about 4,265 feet high from the summit, followed by an ash shower.

Ash spray from the eruption was seen covering roads and vehicles in nearby villages.

At least 100 residents have been evacuated since Friday after Indonesian authorities raised the volcano’s warning level from Level 2 to Level 3, or the second highest level, on Wednesday.

Marapi is known for sudden eruptions that are difficult to predict because they are not caused by deep magma movements, which trigger tremors registered on seismic monitors.

Its eruption in early December shot a thick column of ash more than 9,800 feet high that killed 24 climbers and injured several others caught in the weekend’s sudden eruption.

About 1,400 people live on the slopes of Marapi in Rubai and Gobah Cumantiang, the nearest village about 3.1 to 3.7 miles from the summit.

Marapi has been active since the eruption in January last year which did not cause any casualties. It is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is vulnerable to seismic disturbances due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, a volcanic arc and fault line that encircles the Pacific Basin.
