Westwood Played an Important Part in the Early Ages of Punk
Homage from many punk and new wave musicians is a testament to Westwood’s legacy in helping to create the DIY look and ethos of punk rock.
Westwood is married to musician, songwriter, and an important piece of the punk rock puzzle, Malcolm McLaren. The pair would open the legendary SEX boutique in the mid-seventies, which became a focal point for the era’s fashion during its two-year run from 1974 to ’76.
The personal element that can exist in fashion is an important part of Westwood’s inspiration. According to Pitchfork, Westwood told The Guardian 11 years ago, “If you invest in art, if you study yourself, you become a freedom fighter immediately because your life changes, you get off the consumer treadmill, and you start thinking. My point as fashion designer [is] I say ‘buy less clothes’ Keep wearing the things you really choose that you really like. That is the status. Not that you have to keep eating. A status symbol is a book.”
Westwood was born on April 8, 1941, in Tintwistle, United Kingdom.
