Avinash Mishra was born in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. He holds a master’s degree in physical education. After completing his formal education, Avinash appeared for the Provincial Civil Services (PCS) examination of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission and passed after which he joined the UP Police Academy in Moradabad, where he underwent police training from 1982 to 1985.

Career
After completing his police training in 1985, Avinash Mishra was posted in Meerut as an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI). There, he neutralized three dreaded thugs within a year of his post. Later, he was posted in Mhow from where he was sent to Lucknow in 1998 to track down a notorious gangster named Prakash Shukla. Avinash Mishra, along with several other policemen, established the Special Task Force (STF) in the same year. He then went to Nepal, on information, to arrest Prakash; however, Prakash managed to escape the country and went to Bihar. In an interview, Avinash spoke about it and said,
We almost found it in Nepal, where I went with my team after getting the information. But the Nepalese police intervened in the matter due to which Shukla managed to escape. We also had him in Bihar, but we could not get him because the relationship between the then UP and Bihar governments was unstable.”
On September 11, 1998, Mishra and the STF went to Delhi, where they met a dreaded gangster named Munna Bajrangi. During the encounter, Munna was shot several times and declared dead by the police; however, the morgue staff, where he was taken for an autopsy, found him alive. In an interview, Mishra spoke about it and said,
It is very embarrassing. We had already announced in the media that he was dead and now he was suddenly declared alive. This further proves Jaakho Raake Saaiyan, Maar Sake Na Koi.”
On 22 September 1998, Mishra and the STF went to Indirapuram in Ghaziabad, where a fight broke out between the STF and Shukla which eventually led to Shukla’s death. According to Mishra, Shukla’s location was determined by the STF after he switched on his mobile phone while he was visiting his girlfriend at her house in Ghaziabad.

In 2002, the STF, under the leadership of Mishra, met Chhota Rajan’s close associates, Sattu Pandey and Guddu in Lucknow. Reportedly, Sattu carries a cash reward of Rs. 1 lac on him and wanted for the murder of a UP-based businessman named Vivek Srivastava as well as for the robbery of a garment shop in Aminabad. After that, he met many famous gangsters and mafia like Sachin Pahadi, Awadhesh Shukla, Ashok Singh, Mahendra Fauji, Nirbhay Gurjar, and Hasan Pudia. In 2009, Avinash Mishra was posted to the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the UP Police; he served there until 2018. He retired from the police as a deputy superintendent of police in 2019.
