Russia launched a barrage of attacks against Ukrainian forces in the eastern part of the country, storming the town of Avdiivka for the fifth day in a row on Saturday.
“The enemy did not stop either attacking or shelling the positions” around Avdiivka, city chief Vitalii Barabash told Ukrainian television.
Barabash also reported that Moscow is deploying additional forces to besiege a strategically important city in the eastern region of Donetsk, located north of the capital of the Moscow-controlled region, also called Donetsk.
“Russia has set a new date to reach the administrative border of the Donetsk region – December 31. That is why it is important for them to take Avdiivka,” Barabash said, according to a position on X by Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
As the Russo-Ukrainian War approached its second winter, about 1,600 civilians remained in Avdiivka, a fraction of its pre-war population of about 31,000.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby on Friday said the United States believes Russian forces have not made much progress in the offensive, adding the new attack “is not surprising.”
