The conviction of British nurse Lucy Letby’s baby killer may have been the “biggest miscarriage of justice” in the United Kingdom, a woman has claimed.
Sarrita Adams, a California-based scientific consultant for a biotech startup with no apparent connection to Letby, is trying to raise money for Letby’s appeal after the killer nurse was convicted earlier this month and sentenced to life in prison in the deaths of seven babies.
Adams is among those who think there are holes in the evidence against Letby, or issues with the way it was presented in court, the Telegraph reported.
Statistician Richard Gill, 72, described Letby’s case as “a trial that would not have happened if anyone had talked to a statistician.”
Letby, 33, is believed to have tried to kill an additional six victims, making him one of the worst child serial killers in modern UK history.
He was convicted after a detailed 10-month trial.

“This data is very selective,” Gill claims. “[It] just looking at the events that happened while Lucy Letby was on duty.”
Gill argues that without a broader picture, it is mathematically impossible to draw conclusions from the data about who was on duty when the babies died.

“How can you tell if a death that happened when Lucy was there was different from a death that happened when she wasn’t there?” he asked. “There were more deaths that happened when he wasn’t there. […] All you have to do is compare the death rates.”
