Interviewing Biden ‘the saddest thing’ as he ‘couldn’t finish his sentences,’ ex-ESPN host Sage Steele says

Former ESPN host Sage Steele said that interviewing President Biden was “the saddest thing” because he seemed confused and “couldn’t finish his sentences.”

“He struggled,” Steele said of the oldest president in US history, who “left” the topic at the time, more than two years ago.

“So forget about politics. I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” Steele told Bill Maher on Sunday’s “Hostage Club” podcast, admitting he thinks Biden is a “terrible president.”

“Anyway, it makes me sad,” he said of his confusion.

“The human aspect of what we’re witnessing now, to me, is heartbreaking,” he said of the now 80-year-old president facing mounting pressure over his age and a series of missteps as he bids to stay in office. .

Steele told the comedian that he interviewed Biden in March 2021 for a pre-recorded segment ahead of that year’s MLB Opening Day.

“It is [via] satellite, it’s not personal,” he explained, noting that he had to stop the chief executive while they waited for technical issues to be resolved.

“So I had to, like, BS. I had to chat, wait for us to start rolling.”

Steele said he couldn’t see the president because his staff kept the lens caps on the cameras “until the last minute, but you can hear and we’re having a conversation.”

“So I can hear it and he goes, ‘What’s this for? Wait — what’s his name?’” Steele recounted as Maher began to laugh.

“I said, ‘Oh my God!’ And then [an aide] said, ‘SportsCenter, ESPN.’ And he said, ‘Oh, OK.'”

At that point, the president started telling him about his own football career.

In high school, Biden was a standout quarterback and wide receiver. He also briefly played football as a freshman at the University of Delaware.

“So he started telling football stories about how great he was,” Steele recounted, noting he still couldn’t see it.

“He said, ‘I have the best hands.’ What do you say about that?” asked Steele.

“And here’s the saddest thing — his voice was slow. He said, ‘I’m fine,’ and then he shut up, and he went …, ‘Uh, it’s okay.’

“I think it’s very sad because I realize that’s why he’s been in the basement this whole election cycle — because even though he can’t finish his sentence, he’s struggling.”

“So forget about politics. I don’t care, I didn’t vote for him,” he revealed. “Still, it makes me sad.”

Earlier in the discussion with Maher, Steele said he thought Biden was a “terrible president.

“Still, forget that — the human aspect we’re witnessing now with him, to me, is heartbreaking. And it’s unforgivable for the family when you find out during the election.”

The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host mocked Biden on Friday night, describing the president as “the only Democrat who could lose to Trump,” even though the men are only four years apart in age.

“Someone needs to convince President Biden that if he runs again, he will return the country to Trump and go down … in history as Ruth Bader Biden, a person who does not know when to quit and does so to the great detriment of their party and their country,” said Maher, referring to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“What matters is that voters think Biden is too old,” he continued. “What matters is that he will lose to Trump.”
