Fleeing Sri Lanka in the midst of the Sri Lankan crisis
On 12 July 2022, Ioma Rajapaksa, along with her husband Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled the country amid violent protests due to the economic crisis. Many sources claim the couple fled the country, to the Maldives, on an Antonov An-32 aircraft belonging to the Sri Lankan Air Force. From the Maldives, the couple went to Singapore, and from there, the couple moved to Thailand. In August 2022, many reports surfaced claiming that Ioma and Gotabaya might return to Sri Lanka in the first week of September as they were allocated VISAs for Thailand for only 90 days. The media also reported that another reason for their return may be the unsustainable amount of money required to live in an expensive place like Thailand with 24/7 VVIP security around them.
