Powerball losers in Iowa were actually winners for about seven hours this week after the state lottery mistakenly posted the wrong winning number for the game.
Lottery officials blamed an unspecified “human reporting error” for the incorrect numbers posted for Monday night’s Powerball drawing.
The wrong number was posted on the Iowa Lottery website about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and it took until 7:15 a.m. before anyone noticed the mistake, took the number down and stopped paying.
The lottery said a wrong initial number would result in prizes ranging from $4 to $200 — officials did not say how many people won.
Whoever gets up early and cashes the winning ticket gets to keep the money.
Monday night’s Powerball jackpot is for an estimated $355 million.
