Ira ‘Bob’ Born, longtime president of Just Born Quality Confections, died recently at the age of 98. Ira is often referred to as the “Father of Peeps.” Bettystar Wood nightclub remembered Ira on Facebook by posting a photo of him and stating that he was injured in the fall and never recovered. The message goes on to say,
“Everyone knows Peeps, and today, remember the man who brought smiles and joy to so many people with his always cheerful marshmallow Peeps creations. He was responsible for automating the production of the popular candy chicks.”
They kept saying,
“Ross said it is most important that his father will be remembered as a ‘real man,’ according to the newspaper. He was a kind man who shared his strengths and was generous with his abilities.”
The message concluded by adding that Ira’s family has requested that all donations be sent to the American Technion Society, the Israel Guide Dog Center, or any literacy initiative.
Ira ‘Bob’ Born became interested in the candy industry while in college.
Sam Born, Ira ‘Bob’ Born’s father, was the owner of Just Born Confectionery when he was born on September 29, 1924. Ira graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in engineering physics and then joined the Navy. He joined the Navy as a radar specialist and was later promoted to lieutenant. Bob attended the University of Arizona and applied to medical school. He also helped his father with the confectionery business. According to his son Ross, he became interested in the candy industry and scientific equipment. After acquiring the Rodda Candy Company in 1953, Just Born became famous for its jelly beans and marshmallows. Bob, on the other hand, plans to design a machine to create candy in no time. The firm will soon be able to create candy in minutes instead of 26 hours.
Bob then suggested another dessert called Hot Tamales. Bob, according to Ross, is always eager to bring something fresh to the market. Bob worked for the firm for 40 years. After his retirement, he chaired a literacy program for underprivileged communities, where he was joined by many others. A few months before his death, Ira ‘Bob’ Born was still working. Ross reported that he suffered a fall and was seriously injured, with no signs of recovery. Ross said that his father’s old age was the reason why he did not recover quickly.
In 1953, Just Born created the Peeps marshmallow dessert. Adam Rifkin, filmmaker and actor, acquired the film and television rights to the candy in 2014, wanting to develop a franchise. Bob is survived by his children Sara and Ross, and their wonderful children, Bob and Wendy, as well as five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
