Austin Butler seems to be blurring the lines about his relationship with Vanessa Hudgens. She calls him a friend, but we all know it’s more than that.

The Elvis actor dated Hudgens for nearly nine years so when he referred to her as a “friend” in a recent interview, many people were confused. The actress entered the Golden Globe round table with Hollywood Reporter after his win and epic speech to talk about getting the role and the positivity his “friends” instilled in him.
“Months before I heard Baz [Luhrmann] is making [“Elvis”] movie, I was going to see the Christmas lights with a friend,” he recalled. “And there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio, and I was singing along, and my friend looked at me and said, ‘You have to play Elvis!'”
He called the idea a “long shot” at the time but, “a few weeks later, I was playing the piano,” pausing to say that he had “never really sung for any [his] friends.” He continued the story. “The same friend was there, and I played the piano,” he recalls. “He said, ‘I’m serious – you need to figure out how you can get the rights to the script …'”

Shortly after the conversation took place, Austin received a call from his agent and described it as “the hairs standing on my arms.” Austin hasn’t been forthcoming about who this real-life friend is but Vanessa Hudgens, his ex-girlfriend, shared a similar story in 2019 on Stayed with Kelly and Ryan.
The actress is hosting the show in Kelly’s place that day and The Hollywood Reporter just broke the news that she will be playing the iconic singer. Vanessa gushes over her man and says she’s so proud of him.
“It was so crazy because last December, we were driving together and we heard Christmas music and Elvis Presley’s Christmas song came on and he just dyed his hair dark,” she recalled animatedly.
“I saw him and he were singing together and I was like, ‘honey, you have to play Elvis like I don’t know how but I’m serious you have to play him.’ He proceeded to tell her just like Austin did about playing the piano and all that jazz. Except, he put himself in this moment.

The singer-turned-actress is no longer with Hudgens, she’s moved on to nepo baby Kaia Gerber who she was seen making out with after her win on Tuesday night. Maybe Austin doesn’t want to offend Kaia by talking about her ex, publicly but to deny that she has a role as more than a friend is weird.
