Israel agrees to ‘very limited and short’ cease-fire if Hamas releases ‘massive’ number of hostages

Defiant Israeli officials said on Friday they would agree to a “very limited and brief” ceasefire if Hamas released a large number of hostages.

Israel’s National Security Council Chairman Tzachi Hanegbi warned that the release of a large number of about 240 people still in custody should not be a “manipulative release” or exploited for public relations, according to the Times of Israel.

“Only after that we will agree to a ceasefire, and it will be very limited and short because after that, we will continue to advance towards our goal of war,” the chairman said at a press conference Friday.

Hanegbi said Israel’s war cabinet had agreed on a strategy to free some of the hostages and that there would be no compromise.

He believes Hamas will only agree to the proposal if it is under pressure to do so, according to the Times of Israel.

“We are on the 42nd day of the war, and we have not yet agreed to order [Israel Defense Forces] to stop his progress even for a minute,” said Hanegbi.

However, Israel has agreed to a four-hour daily humanitarian pause in Northern Gaza to allow Palestinians to flee.

The bodies of two hostages were found near al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, with the body of Judith Weiss found Wednesday and Israeli officials announcing on Friday that they had also found the body of Cpl. Noa Marciano in the same area.

Marciano appeared in a Hamas video on Monday in which he said he was being held in Gaza and pleaded for Israeli forces to stop bombing the area. The video then cuts to show his lifeless body.
