Much of the world reacted with outrage to the deadly surprise attack on Israel by the Islamist militant group Hamas on Saturday, as Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was at war.
Israelis appealed for help as Hamas fired about 2,500 rockets from Gaza across central and southern Israel, reaching Jerusalem — while Palestinian terrorists infiltrated communities in the country’s south by land, sea and air.
More than 500 Israelis were reported injured and 70 killed.
“We are at war,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address, declaring a massive military deployment. “Not an ‘operation’, not a ’round’, but a war.”
“The enemy will pay an unprecedented price,” he added, promising that Israel would “return fire with a magnitude unknown to the enemy.”
