Two American women held hostage by Hamas are expected to be freed this week, the Biden administration said Monday.
Earlier in the day, an agreement was reached to extend the temporary Israel-Hamas ceasefire for two more days, officials from Qatar and Egypt, which have been the main mediators in the ongoing conflict, said.
The announcement came on the last day of a four-day ceasefire and hostage exchange that took effect Friday.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk landed in Tel Aviv on Monday and began his visit to the Jewish state by accompanying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a tour of a kibbutz attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7 — as the tech mogul countered claims that he was antisemitic.
Also, new photos Monday showed a smiling Abigail Edan, the 4-year-old Israeli-American who was freed Sunday, surrounded by family in an Israeli hospital. He was orphaned in the October 7 terrorist attack when Hamas killed both his parents and kidnapped him.
How many hostages have been released?
- Hamas has released a total of 58 hostages since a temporary ceasefire took effect on Friday
- Israel has released 117 Palestinian prisoners since Friday
