Israel intercepts Red Sea missile, sets sights on southernmost Gaza

Israel on Friday shot down a missile fired at it from the Red Sea – a preferred method of attack by Yemen-backed Houthi rebels who have terrorized the region, including by targeting US ships.

The Israel Defense Forces says its Arrow air defense system intercepts surface-to-surface rockets.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Houthi terrorists have regularly launched drone and missile attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea since November 19, saying they were in protest against Israel’s operations in Gaza.

The development comes as the IDF indicated it is shifting its military focus in Gaza to Rafah – the southernmost city in the Palestinian-controlled strip – after completing its mission in south-central Khan Younis, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, according to CNN.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled to Rafah, which shares a border with Egypt, as the IDF begins in the north and moves south.

Israel has recently focused on Khan Younis, where it claims to have killed hundreds of Hamas fighters in the past day.

Israel’s military said its Arrow air defense system intercepted a surface-to-surface missile fired into Israeli territory on Friday from the Red Sea.

Many civilians in Khan Younis are said to have “crammed” into Rafah after their town was attacked, according to the UN.

“Rafah is a pressure cooker of despair, and we worry for what will happen next,” United Nations representative Jens Laerke said on Friday.

“In recent days, thousands of Palestinians have continued to flee to the south, which already hosts more than half of Gaza’s population of approximately 2.3 million people. Most of them live in temporary structures, tents or in the open,” said Laerke.

Israeli forces also seized the equivalent of $27,300 from a Hamas bank vault in central Gaza, according to the Times of Israel.

It also revealed intelligence documents on the bank, the IDF said.

Meanwhile, the Iran-backed terrorist group Al-Nujaba has vowed to continue attacks on US forces until the US withdraws its people from Iraq and a cease-fire takes place in Gaza, according to CNN.

Leader Akram Al-Kaabi said his group would not follow the lead of Hezbollah, another Iran-backed terrorist organization, which said Tuesday it would suspend its terror campaign against the US.
