Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan dramatically held up a poster with the phone number of Hamas’ central office on the floor of the United Nations on Tuesday and urged other members to call if they want a “real ceasefire” in Gaza.
Erdan made the fiery confession shortly before the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Palestinian territories and the release of all hostages.
Israel, the US and eight other countries opposed the resolution.
“Honestly I don’t know how anyone can look in the mirror and support a resolution that doesn’t condemn Hamas and doesn’t mention Hamas by name. But you know what? I have a suggestion. If you want a real ceasefire, this is the right address,” said Erdan before speeding up the sign.
The sign — titled “To dial a cease-fire” — displayed the phone number for Hamas’ office in the Gaza Strip and a picture of the group’s leader Yahya Sinwar, who Erdan urged listeners to call with demands for peace.
“Tell Hamas to lay down their weapons, surrender and return our hostages. This will bring about a complete ceasefire that will last forever,” said Erdan.

Erdan repeated Israel’s long-standing calls for relentless bombing and incursions into Gaza, and said the country would not stop its mission until Hamas complied.
He later insisted that the non-binding resolution, which passed 153-10, would not carry weight in Israel’s escalating attacks on Gaza.
“No piece of paper, especially one adopted by a biased political majority will prevent Israel from defending itself against those who want our destruction,” he continued.

“Israel is fighting for its future. There is not a single Member State here — there is not a single Member State here — that would act differently in the same situation.”
The resolution gained majority approval just days after the US vetoed a resolution in the Security Council demanding a humanitarian ceasefire.
The Biden administration instead has repeatedly called on Israel to protect Palestinian civilians, while also approving the emergency sale of 14,000 rounds of ammunition to Israel.

Gaza’s health ministry reported 350 people killed on Thursday, and on Friday it said the death toll from Israel’s campaign in Gaza had risen to 17,487.
