Israeli officer killed by Hamas just weeks after performing song about dying on competition show

An Israeli soldier was killed in the war against Hamas, just weeks after he auditioned for the country’s popular “The Next Star” competition with a song about death.

Reserve Captain Shaul Greenglick, 26, from Ra’anana, a member of the Nahal Brigade’s 931st Battalion, was killed on Monday in the northern part of the enclave during a battle with terrorists, the Times of Israel reported.

The then-lieutenant appeared in his fatigues last month to sing “Blind Bat,” written by Hanan Ben Ari, according to a video posted by Clash Report.

“Give me the strength to find courage in me, to see the signs, because even the child in me died some time ago,” Greenglick sang in Hebrew on Channel 12.

“I am a blind bat screaming my life in the dark. I sleep but my heart is awake because I am addicted to joy and write at night songs that take away sadness and run out of air,” he continued as the audience nodded in agreement.

IDF Captain Shay Greenglick, 26, who was killed in the Gaza Strip, last month auditioned for a reality TV show by singing a song that referred to death. N12 Greenglick’s Hebrew song for “The Next Star” is titled “Blind Bat.” N12

The soldier later posted on his since-locked Facebook account that he envisioned 2023 as a year of “ambition and dream fulfillment,” according to The Messenger.

“I hope this period passes quickly and promise to continue fighting for the country I love and also for my dreams in the future. Right now there is only one thing on my mind and that is to keep fighting in the dark until we see the light and thus our broadcast for the upcoming season is over,” he wrote, according to the outlet.

“The Next Star,” called “Ha’Kochav Haba” in Hebrew, is an interactive reality TV singing competition created by Keshet Media Group and broadcast on Channel 12.

“Shaul joined the current season of ‘The Next Star’ and moved us all. We offer our condolences and share the deep sorrow of family and friends. The next episode of the next star will be dedicated to Shaul. A blessed memory,” said Keshet in a statement.

Also killed on Monday was reserve Master Sgt. Maor Lavi, 33, from Battalion 450 Bislamach Brigade, and Captain Shay Shamriz, 26, also from Battalion 931 Nahal.

Shamriz is the second cousin of Alon Shamriz, one of three Israeli hostages who were mistakenly shot by the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip after they fled from Hamas.
