Israeli strikes on Gaza intensify, pressure mounts over civilian casualties

Israeli fighter jets struck 450 Hamas targets in Gaza and troops seized militant enclaves in the past 24 hours, the Israel Defense Forces said on Monday, while the Palestinian territory’s health ministry said the airstrikes killed dozens of people.

A Reuters reporter in the Gaza Strip described the overnight bombardment from the air, land and sea as some of the most intense since Israel launched its offensive in response to a surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israel a month ago.

Health officials in Hamas-controlled Gaza say more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed in the war, which began when Hamas killed 1,400 people and took more than 240 hostages on Oct. 7.

Refusing to accept a ceasefire until the hostages are released, Israel faces constant pressure to avoid civilian casualties in its attacks on Gaza, while the US diplomatic offensive in the region seeks to reduce the risk of an escalating conflict.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to meet Turkey’s foreign minister in Ankara, hours after hundreds of people in pro-Palestinian protests tried to storm an air base housing US troops in southern Turkey.

Blinken on Sunday made an unannounced visit to the West Bank to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who joined international calls for an immediate ceasefire.

Blinken reiterated US concerns that a ceasefire could help Hamas, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed it for now. “There will be no ceasefire without the return of the hostages,” Netanyahu said.

Gaza’s health ministry said dozens of people were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City, and further south in Gaza neighborhoods such as Zawaida and Deir Al-Balah.

The IDF said its strikes targeted “tunnels, terrorists, military compounds, observation posts, and anti-tank missile launch posts”. Ground forces killed several Hamas fighters while taking militant areas with observation posts, training areas for Hamas operations and underground terrorist tunnels, he said.

VISIT OF CIA CHIEF REPORTED

Senior Hamas commander Jamal Mussa, who headed the group’s special security operations, was among those killed, the IDF said.

Israel says 31 soldiers have been killed since it began an expanded ground operation in Gaza on October 27, against thousands of Hamas fighters who believe they can hold off an Israeli advance in a warren of tunnels under the enclave.

An Israeli military spokesman told CNN late Sunday that shelling in northern Gaza was halted for several hours for two days in a row to allow civilians safe passage south of the narrow coastal strip.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus added that there was access to water and humanitarian goods in southern Gaza, but Hamas blocked the convoys by shooting at them. Reuters could not immediately verify his account.

US CIA Director William Burns is also set to visit Israel on Monday to discuss war and intelligence with senior officials, the New York Times reported.

Burns will also stop in other Middle Eastern countries to discuss the situation in Gaza, the Times quoted an unnamed US official as saying.

The CIA did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

US Vice President Kamala Harris will call foreign leaders on Monday to discuss the conflict and advance the administration’s efforts to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, her office said.

The Jordanian air force dropped urgent medical aid to a Jordanian field hospital in Gaza early Monday, according to an X broadcast from Jordan’s king and reports in state media.

US Central Command, which covers the Middle East, said on X that an Ohio-class nuclear-powered missile submarine had arrived in the region – an unusual announcement of the nuclear submarine’s position that some analysts saw as a message to Iran.

“Throughout the night me and other men tried to collect the dead from the rubble. We get children, cut to pieces, torn to pieces,” said Saeed al-Nejma, 53.

When asked for comment, the IDF said it was gathering details.

In a separate attack, 21 Palestinians from one family were killed in an attack, the health ministry said. The IDF declined to comment.

Reuters could not independently verify this account.

“We demand that you stop them from committing these crimes immediately,” Abbas told Blinken, calling for an “immediate ceasefire” from Israel.

The Palestinians are facing a war of “massacre and extermination”, the WAFA news agency quoted Abbas as saying.

The war has fueled Israeli-Palestinian violence elsewhere.

In East Jerusalem, Israeli police said a 16-year-old Palestinian stabbed and wounded two officers before being shot dead.

In the occupied West Bank, another region where Palestinians are seeking statehood, medics said one Palestinian was killed and three others wounded by Israeli gunfire. A military spokesman had no immediate comment on the incident.

Tensions are rising with Lebanon after an Israeli attack on a car in the country’s south killed three children and their grandmother, Lebanese authorities said.

The Israeli military said it had struck “Hizbollah terrorist targets in southern Lebanon” in response to a missile attack on a tank that killed an Israeli citizen.

Hezbollah said it responded by firing rockets into the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona.

The group said it would not tolerate attacks on civilians and that its response would be “firm and strong”.
