Israeli woman stalled Hamas terrorists for 20 hours by serving drinks, asking for Arabic lessons

An Israeli couple held hostage for 20 hours by Hamas militants bought their own time while waiting to be rescued by offering their captors drinks, cracking jokes, and asking for lessons in Arabic.

After rocket sirens forced Rahel Edri and her husband into the bomb shelter of their Ofakim home, five men claiming to be police officers barged in and began giving orders, Edri told Walla, according to Haaretz.

The man, who spoke Arabic, forced the couple upstairs, broke both their phones and began rummaging through their closets.

“They pointed a gun at me and held a grenade over my head,” Edri recalled. “I told him I had to inject insulin, trying to distract them from the fact that I have a son who is a police officer … I offered them drinks: Coke Zero, water.”

The man then tells Edri that they are heroes and that their children support their actions.

While the couple was being held hostage, the man would regularly check the windows of the house to make sure no one came to rescue them.

In an attempt to buy more time, Edri starts talking and joking with his captors.

“I said, ‘I’ll teach you Hebrew, and you’ll teach me Arabic,'” he said. “I understand that it is a matter of life and death.”

“Suddenly, around midnight, we heard the special forces come in,” she said, recalling how nervous she was when her rescuers accidentally shot her or her husband.

“Instead of killing us, the terrorists ran to various locations and hid until they were shot,” said Edri. “I want to thank the police. They are our heroes.”

Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip launched their worst attack on Israel in 50 years on Saturday.

An estimated 800 Israelis have been killed, over 2,000 wounded, and 100 confirmed captives by Hamas since the war began.

At least nine Americans have been killed in the violence and others are still missing, a National Security Council spokesman told CNN on Monday.

Gaza health officials reported at least 300 Palestinians killed with 2,200 injured.
