Israeli history teacher arrested after suggesting Hamas terror attack was justified

A history and civics teacher at a school in Petah Tikva, Israel, was arrested after suggesting Hamas was responsible for the atrocities it committed during the October 7 attack, police said.

The teacher, who has not been publicly named, was fired and accused of spreading propaganda on WhatsApp because he insisted Hamas was free to do anything to fight Israel, The Times of Israel reported.

“The occupied country is allowed to do whatever it takes to succeed in its struggle,” he said in a group message last month with other teachers.

The instructor also defended the alleged rapes committed by Hamas, claiming that members of the IDF also sexually assaulted people during the decades-long conflict between Israel and Palestine.

“Israeli soldiers don’t rape Palestinians? They have been around since 1948, and this is not included in the textbooks,” he wrote.

Police said a complaint was filed against the teacher, who was later fired by Petah Tikva municipality and the Ministry of Education.

The man appeared in court on Friday, with a judge extending his detention until at least Monday as police continue to investigate the case, officials said.

“We take seriously this case where a history teacher who educates children in a school in Israel, distorts history, calls IDF pilots murderers, condones the actions of the enemy and helps the enemy during the war, among other things, with fabrications that include blaming IDF soldiers ,” police said in a statement, according to Israeli outlet Mako.

The teacher has also been accused of expressing anti-IDF sentiment in the past and trying to encourage high school students to refuse to serve in the Israeli army.

He also slammed IDF pilots as “child killers” who served with the army even though “they knew what the outcome would be.”

His arrest comes after Israeli police said they would adhere to a zero-tolerance policy against incitement to violence and terrorism since the country launched a retaliation in the Gaza Strip for the Hamas massacre that killed at least 1,200 in Israel on Oct. 7.

So far, the Israeli police have recorded 48 of these criminal allegations and are investigating 381 publications regarding statements made about the war.

Israeli Interior Minister Moshe Arbe has gone so far as to propose stripping individuals of their citizenship if they express solidarity with terrorist groups or incite violence during wartime.
