Italy’s most famous influencer, Chiara Ferragni, paid more than $2 million after being caught tricking her nearly 30 million followers into thinking the cake sales she promoted would go to charity.

Ferragni, 36, was fined the equivalent of $1.2 million by competition watchdog AGCM over misleading allegations surrounding his Ferragni-branded pandoro, which is a lighter version of panettone cake.

He later blamed a “miscommunication” for the scandal on Monday while pledging the equivalent of another $1.1 million to the children’s cancer hospital used in the false promotion.

The fashion influencer’s reconciliation came after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the businessman.

“The real models to follow are not influencers who make a lot of money wearing clothes and showing off bags … or promoting expensive cakes that make people believe they are charities,” Meloni said on Sunday, without being named.

Cake maker Balocco was also fined $460,000 for its alleged role in misleading customers that sales of the cakes would benefit a bone cancer charity at a hospital in Turin.

Balocco only made a $55,000 payment to the hospital a few months before Ferragni’s pandoro launched and Ferragni made no contribution while his company received 1 million euros — about $1.1 million — for the branding collaboration, regulators said.

On Monday, a remorseful Ferragni promised to make a large donation to the hospital at the center of the scandal, Regina Margherita, in a video that was liked nearly 1.4 million times by Wednesday evening.

“I realize I made a communication mistake. A mistake that I will appreciate in the future, completely separating any charitable activity, which I have always done and will continue to do, from commercial activity,” he said in Italian, according to Google Translate.

The influencer said he opposed the “disproportionate and unfair” fines imposed by Rome officials.

“But, if the final sanction is – as I hope – lower than the one decided by the AGCM, the difference will be added to the million euros,” he told his followers about the amount pledged to the hospital.
