Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke of international fatigue with the conflict in Ukraine and the lack of support for Italy in dealing with migration in a phone call with a Russian comedian.
The 13-minute audio of the call, which dates back to September, was released online on Wednesday by Russia’s Vovan and Lexus, who have duped politicians and other Western celebrities in an effort to elicit candid and unguarded statements.
Meloni’s office said in a statement that it regretted that he had been duped by an imposter posing as the head of the African Union Commission.
It said the call was made on September 18 ahead of a meeting with African leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
Asked about Russia’s war in Ukraine, Meloni, speaking in English, said: “I see that there is a lot of fatigue, I have to say the truth, from all sides. We are (already) close to the moment where everyone understands that we need a way out.”

“The problem is to find a way out that is acceptable to both without destroying international law,” he added.
Faced with Italy’s position as the first port of call for many migrants crossing the Mediterranean, Meloni complained that international partners were not doing enough to help.
“They all agree that only Italy has to solve this problem alone. It’s a very stupid way of thinking.”
Prankster Lexus, or Alexei Stolyarov, said Meloni is at least one person who is ready to share his true opinion.

“Unfortunately, unlike him, many European politicians behave like programmed robots and express views that are only voiced within their own circles,” he told Reuters by phone. He spoke while Vovan also listened to the call with Meloni, he explained.
Meloni, Italy’s prime minister for a year, split with his fellow TV presenters last month after off-air video excerpts from his program showed him using abusive language and appearing to make advances to female colleagues.
