Ivory Aquino Appeals Cancellation Of ‘Batgirl’ In Touching Letter

Since the surprise cancellation of the unreleased American superhero film “Batgirl” earlier this month, fans, cast and crew have been devastated, leading several to voice their opinions on the turn of events.

Ivory Aquino is one of the people who is really worried about the termination because she recently wrote a letter of appeal to the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), David Zaslav, pleaded for “the move to be reconsidered.” It should be noted that Aquino is set to star as Alysia Yeoh, a bartender and best friend of the main character Barbara Gordon, aka, Batgirl, played by actress Leslie Grace.

The Filipino-American actress naturally shared a screenshot of her detailed letter on Instagram, adding a caption indicating she had just read an article from the Hollywood Reporter, prompting her to write to Zaslav. “Dear Mr. Zaslav,” his letter began, “I just read an article about Batgirl’s ‘funeral screening’ and the possibility that after that the footage of the film will be destroyed.”

He continued, “If this is the case, as one of the many who poured our hearts into the making of this film, I ask that this move be reconsidered.” Although Aquino has tried her best to be strong over the past few weeks, she admitted to finding herself crying out of “grief” over her love and the loss of “Batgirl.”

He noted that although the production was labeled a “wake up film,” it came together that way since the writing reflected “the world we live in.” The “When We Rise” star sees the creation as a “father-daughter story” that she can relate to when her father died a year ago, not long before she was involved in “Batgirl.”

He also hopes it will “resonate with other kids around the world, adults and not-so-adults, who look up to their fathers and can see Batgirl as a story about that special bond.” Aquino couldn’t talk about the cancellation of the movie with anyone, not even his co-stars and the crew who really understood, because he believed the wound was still too fresh.

His heart goes out to them, especially Leslie Grace, who consoled him after hearing the sad news and “had to put on a brave face as a way of looking after us with the way he gracefully navigated our film.” He went on to credit a friend for inspiring him to write the emotional letter that led to his closing plea to release “Batgirl” and noted that the character has always been an “underdog” with nowhere to go but up.

Following the cancellation of the DC film, The Blast reports that another of its stars, the main character himself, broke his silence with a public message expressing his pride at being a part of such a great project. Grace shared:

“In light of the recent news about our film ‘Batgirl’, I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over the course of 7 months in Scotland.”

Leslie Grace Lands Leading Role In “Batgirl” Despite Strenuous Auditions

Amid preparations for the production of “Batgirl”, The Blast revealed last October that the team had to go through a long list of female characters, taking some time, before choosing Grace.

The film’s star reportedly underwent an extraordinary audition, leaving the directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, mesmerized by her perfect portrayal of the character’s natural feminine demeanor and the ferocity a vigilante must possess.

When asked about the “In The Heights” star’s casting for the role, Arbi praised her talent, saying, “There’s something surprising, and [we] felt like we were actually watching Barbara Gordon.”

Upon hearing the news about getting the role, Grace was thrilled and couldn’t believe the update. He also sent DC a thank you note for welcoming him into the family.

Although the competition for the lead role in “Batgirl” was reportedly quite serious, the chosen lead actress was able to dominate other performers such as Zoey Deutsch, Isabella Merced, and Haley Lu Richardson.
