Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about how she felt when people turned against her after her husband, Will Smith, shocked the world by slapping Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars.

The “Red Table Talk” host shared that “it’s ridiculous how far it goes” in regards to how much people blame her for Will’s actions.

She tied it to the notion that there was a “false narrative” that she had cheated on Will, referencing her affair with August Alsina, which apparently happened when she was separated from the “Men in Black” star.

“But I also understand at the same time. Given the false narrative that I had cheated on Will or that I was like an adulteress, Will had never done that before. And I think when we just look at human nature… when you look at breadcrumbs, people need something to blame,” Jada said in a recent interview with People magazine.

He added, “So, people who don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes, I’m certainly not surprised that I’m being blamed. But I understand that’s just the human nature of it all.

While Jada wasn’t surprised that she was being blamed, she was surprised that the slapping incident actually happened and initially thought it was a pre-planned skit.

Rock had been on stage anchoring part of the Oscar show when he made a joke about Jada’s bald head caused by alopecia. Within seconds, Will had taken the stage, slapped his co-star, and shouted the now famous words, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!”

When the actor returned to his seat, Jada realized that it wasn’t a joke and that Will had slapped Rock for real.

“I was like, ‘There’s no way Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started walking back to his chair that I realized it wasn’t a skit,” Jada said while explaining her reaction at the time.

“I want to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line, and I was wrong,” Will said at the time. “I’m shy, and my actions don’t show the man I want. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

After months away from the social scene, Will issued another apology in a YouTube clip where he explained that Jada did not influence him to slap Rock.
