Civil Service Exam Preparation
Jagrati Awasthi has been an exceptional student since childhood who has always topped every exam. In addition to studying, he actively participates in various social activities including debate competitions and public speaking events. After pursuing engineering from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Jagrati appeared for the Graduate Aptitude Test in the Engineering exam in 2016 and passed in the first attempt, securing an All India (Air) rank of 41. After that, he worked as a technical officer at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Jagrati, while working there, made his first attempt to qualify the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination, but was unable to do so due to his tight schedule. Later, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming an IAS officer and quit his job to devote his full time to UPSC exams. When asked why he decided to quit his prestigious job at BHEL, he said,
From childhood, we used to hear that collectors are a big deal. Didn’t know about the exam, but gradually came to know that there is a civil service exam. Since I come from a middle-class family, there was always the idea of being financially stable. It always crossed my mind, if I didn’t do anything, it would burden my parents. So I worked for two years and saved. When the job is done, I think about what interests me. I love meeting and talking to people. So the Civil Service is a platform where opportunities to do so will continue to be available.”
Soon after quitting her job in Bhopal, Jagrati Awasthi moved to Delhi to take up professional coaching. But COVID-19 came as a hindrance in his journey, and he moved back to Bhopal, India. Undeterred by the impact of the outbreak, Jagrati Awasthi started taking online classes. During the interview, he explained his preparation strategy as,
After failing the first time, first of all, I made an analysis of where I failed. After this I realized the syllabus was not finished the first time, no practice, no revision was done. The second time, I gave myself only one month to understand the nature of the questions, understand the syllabus thoroughly. Practice questions repeatedly and revise. Currently, there is a Covid infection, but I am standing firm.”
He further added,
In the second attempt, I was scared before the pre-examination. I started giving one mock test every day two months before the exam. In this way, I practiced the exam 60 times. So I don’t have any problems. I believe that those who want to do UPSC, should first read the subject carefully, and when the pre is near, then increase the practice through mock tests.
After preparing for over a year, Jagrati Awasthi appeared for the second time for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination in 2020 with sociology as an optional subject. He passed both the preliminary exam and the main exam in one go and obtained a total of 1052 marks (878 in the written test and 176 in the personality test), resulting in a total of 51.95%. Jagrati achieved AIR 2. She is also the woman topper of the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination in 2020.
Jagrati Awasthi aspires to work as an IAS officer for rural development and concentrate on the welfare of children and women. After topping the UPSC 2020 exam, Jagrati was flooded with phone calls, and she had several interviews with media persons. During an interview with a media house, Jagrati Awasthi dedicated her success to her parents and brother, she said,
My parents don’t watch TV since last four years because firstly my parents want my brother to clear NEET and then for my studies. In fact they used to talk on the phone outside the home and rarely shared personal news. My mother is a school teacher but she left her job to help us in our studies. When I didn’t get selected in my first attempt, I was quite depressed but my mother said don’t curse fate but do more hard work. He was right, I finally made it.”
