Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was hit with new charges by Russia on Friday, according to reports.
Navalny, 47, has already served more than 30 years in prison after he was found guilty on charges he and his supporters say are politically motivated.
This time, he said in a social media post shared by his spokesperson that he had been charged in accordance with article 214 of the Russian penal code, which covers the crime of vandalism.
Navalny, a longtime critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the Kremlin wanted to “start a new criminal case against me every three months.”
“I don’t even know whether to describe my latest news as sad, funny or ridiculous,” he said in comments posted on social media Friday through his team. “Never before have prisoners in solitary confinement for more than a year had such a rich social and political life.”

A former lawyer, Navalny was arrested in 2021, after arriving in Moscow from Germany where he had been recovering from nerve agent poisoning he blamed on the Kremlin.
He has since been sentenced to three prison terms and faces several months in solitary confinement after being accused of various minor offences, according to reports.
