Jameela Jamil Defends Selena Gomez Amid Weight Gain Backlash

Jameela Jamil has come out in support of Selena Gomez after she recently faced criticism for her weight gain.

Some people seemed offended after the singer and actress walked the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet looking bigger than usual, and they mocked her on social media. While the body shaming prompted Gomez to release a video addressing it, Jamil has used her platform to add her voice to the fray, highlighting people’s lack of need to “justify their size.”

Jamil always speaks his mind and does not back down from his position, regardless of the conversation. The British star did so again after she realized that internet trolls had a field day going after Gomez when she showed off her new weight at the Golden Globes on January 11.

The former BBC Radio 1 presenter’s rant began with her stating that the fact that Gomez felt attacked enough to “explain or defend her size” was “a sign that we have FAILED terribly as a society.”

She added that it is unnecessary for anyone to “justify their size” because “No one has the right to comment on or understand another person’s body.” Jamil explained that with the “return of size zero” – thanks to “all these damn celebrities taking diabetes drugs to be thin,” the tradition of “women apologizing for their bodies” shouldn’t return.

“The Good Place” actress ended her applause by praising Gomez as a “beautiful” woman who “deserves better than this.” In fact, for the on-screen star, “We all deserve better than this.”

The message was posted on an Instagram Story a few days after Gomez herself appeared on Instagram Live with her sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey. The 30-year-old said:

“I’m a bit big now because I had fun during the holidays,” in a clip re-shared on TikTok, before asking her sister, “Really?”

The nine-year-old replied, “Yes,” after which they began to laugh, and he added, “But we don’t care.”

Before that, The Blast observed that a body-shamer had told the “Only Murders in the Building” actress that her “body would look like your mom” if she continued to let her weight fluctuations happen.

Another troll directed, “Selena, time to get in shape.” This is not the first time the former Disney star has received and responded to offensive remarks about her body.

In 2022, he shared a video on TikTok in which he stated, “So I’m trying to stay skinny, but I go to Jack in the Box, and I get four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich.”

“But honestly, I don’t care about my weight because people criticize it: ‘You’re too small.’ ‘You’re too big.’ ‘That’s not appropriate.’ ‘Meh meh meh meh.’ Gosh, I’m perfect the way I am. Moral of the story? Bye,” Gomez chastised.

Jamil Wants Nothing To Do With Losing Weight With Diabetes Medication

Jamil talks about the rise of celebrities and other individuals using Ozempic — a drug for people with type II diabetes as a quick weight loss strategy. The Blast shared that the 36-year-old took to Instagram to post a statement that began:

“I have said what I said about the potential dangers of people using diabetes drugs for weight loss only. I fear for everyone in the next few years. Rich people buy this stuff without a prescription for more than 1000 dollars.”

The “Legendary” judge added that the use of injections has become a “mainstream craze in Hollywood,” causing real diabetics to “see a disadvantage.” He shared his hope that things will “not end up the same way” they did when people were told that “opioids are safe” due to “little or no discussion of side effects in any online advertising.”

Jamil concluded, stating, “I am very concerned but I cannot change your mind because fat phobia is choking our generation,” Jamil concluded. A look under the post reveals that although it has received nearly 65,000 likes, there are no comments. He explained the decision for that in the caption, writing:

“I have turned off my comments because there is no point in having this conversation anymore. We will see what happens. I screamed into the void.”

The “How to Build a Girl” star further explained that she hopes she’s “worried for no reason” and that her doctors were wrong about what they told her about Ozempic. Ozempic became the go-to treatment for individuals looking to lose weight after it went viral in social media posts.
